Councils are leaving themselves wide open to fraudulent and criminal activity if
they fail to take appropriate steps to protect their employees’ mobile phones,
handheld devices and laptops. The warning comes from the Risk Management and
Forensic & Investigation practices at leading business and financial adviser,
Grant Thornton One key area for concern is Bluetooth paining attacks whereby an
attacker gains full access to the memory content of a phone/laptop/PDA at the

Harrow Council is piloting lie detector technology in a bid to crackdown on
housing and council tax benefit cheats. Works and pensions secretary, John
Hutton, has announced that voice-risk analysis software, which is already used
by the insurance industry, will be used to help identify suspect cases at the
start of a claim. It analyses changes in a caller’s voice giving an indication
of risk levels. Changes are measure against the caller’s normal voice, which is
recorded at the beginning of the call, ensuring that nervousness or shyness is
not a trigger. Callers will hear a standard message before they speak alerting
them that the technology is being used. If benefit staff assess the answers as
suspicious, the caller may be asked to provide further evidence to support their
claim. Town Hall magazine
