Overall payment card fraud fell last year but online and foreign card fraud is spiralling UK payments association Apacs has revealed.  Total fraud fell 3% between 2005 and 2006 to £428m, and online baking fraud jumped 44% to £33.5m in 2006.  The introduction of chip and pin has hit the traditional retail fraudsters, said Apacs, with shop till fraud falling by 47% in 2006.  Criminals are still successfully copying the magnetic strip on UK cards, with the aim of cloning them to use in countries that do not have a chip and pin system in place, said Apacs.  This has led to fraud abroad rising by 43%.  Card-not-present fraud losses, covering online phone and mail order transactions, have increased by 16% and account for just under 50% of all card fraud losses.  Cheque fraud losses fell from £40,300 in 2005 to £30.6m last year as fewer cheques were used and banks improved verification processes.  Apacs spokeswoman Sandra Quinn said, “These figures clearly show that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to dealing with fraud.  Computer Weekly magazine
