The government had planned to start handing out ID cards along with passports
from 2010 but leaked Home Office information has suggested the cards may come
out two years later in 2012. The new plan will see people get their biometric
ID cards incrementally, the government has said. Foreign nationals are due to
get their ID cards this year in Borders Phase I, while the scheme then said
people in positions of trust like security guards would get their cards in
2009. Borders Phase II however will now roll out to the UK citizens from 2012
angering some members of government. (Town Hall magazine)
