Somerset House is located on the Strand in central London. It overlooks the Thames just a few yards east of Waterloo Bridge. Although it has a rich history (firtst built for the Duke of Somerset in the mid 16th century) and remains a tourist destinatiion thanks to its amazing architecture and courtyard that hosts many outdoor events, Somerset House is most associated with the British public as being the place to obtain certified ciopies of important certification, namely birth, marriage and death certificates.
Somerset House has been the storage centre for all these types of records since the middle of the 18th century, all the way up to 1970. These records have sinced moved on (first to St. Catherine’s House and then on to the Family Records Centre in North London).
